Premier Fence of SWFL builds and installs walk gates, double gates, driveway gates, and automated access for every fence material we work with. Built square, braced properly, and hung on hardware that survives Florida humidity. Licensed contractor CGC1523105.
A fence is a static structure. A gate is a machine — it swings or slides hundreds of times a year, carries its entire weight on a handful of fasteners, and lives outdoors in Southwest Florida heat, rain, and salt air. That is why the overwhelming majority of fence service calls we get are actually gate calls.
Almost all of it is preventable at install. An oversized gate post set deeper than the line posts. A diagonal brace in the frame that transfers load correctly. Hinges rated well above the gate's actual weight. Hardware that will not corrode. None of it is exotic — it is just the difference between building a gate properly and hanging a panel on a post.
Standard three to four foot pedestrian access, matched to the fence material and style. The most common gate we install and the one where good hardware pays for itself fastest.
Two leaves meeting at a center drop rod. Used where you need a wide opening — side yard access for equipment, trailers, or lawn service — without the span of a single oversized gate.
Single or double leaf across a driveway. Needs clear swing arc and level grade through the opening. Can be manual or automated, and should be built automation-ready either way.
The right answer where a swing gate has nowhere to go — a short driveway, a slope, or a commercial entry that stays open during business hours. Rolls parallel to the fence line on a counterbalanced track with no ground rail to jam.
Self-closing, self-latching, outward-opening, with latch hardware placed per Florida barrier code. Not a style choice — a legal requirement, and one that fails inspection often.
Operators, keypads, card and fob readers, remotes, loop detectors, and required safety devices. Sized to the gate's actual weight and expected daily cycle count.
| Opening | Recommended width | Typical configuration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian walk gate | 3 – 4 ft | Single swing | 4 ft if you move a mower or wheelbarrow through |
| Side yard access | 5 – 8 ft | Single or double swing | Measure your widest piece of equipment first |
| Single-lane driveway | 12 – 14 ft | Double swing or slide | 12 ft is a minimum, not a target |
| Driveway with trailer or boat | 14 – 16 ft | Double swing or cantilever slide | Turning angle matters as much as width |
| Commercial vehicle entry | 16 – 24 ft | Cantilever slide | Confirm turning radius for delivery vehicles |
General sizing guidance. Final dimensions depend on your driveway geometry, approach angle, grade, and setback requirements — we confirm on site.
Widening a gate later means moving posts, which is most of the cost of the original installation. If you tow anything — a boat, a trailer, a camper — size for it now even if you do not own it yet.
Aluminum. The easiest material to gate well. Light, rigid, rust-proof, and welded frames stay square. Aluminum gates are also the most automation-friendly because of the favorable weight-to-span ratio.
Vinyl. Requires an internal aluminum or steel frame on anything wider than a walk gate — vinyl alone will not hold its shape across a span. If a vinyl gate you have sags, an unframed build is usually why.
Wood. The heaviest option and the one most dependent on good bracing. We build wood gates on a welded or heavily braced frame rather than relying on the boards for rigidity.
Chain link. Straightforward and durable. The failure point is almost always hardware — we use heavier fittings and hinges than standard residential kits include.
Composite and Simtek. Heavy, so gate posts and hinges get sized up accordingly, and wide spans are usually better as a double gate than a single leaf.
We install and repair gates throughout Collier, Lee, and Charlotte County — from walk gates on Cape Coral canal lots to automated cantilever gates on Fort Myers commercial sites and long driveway gates out in Golden Gate Estates.
Premier Fence of SWFL serves all of Collier, Lee, and Charlotte County — including communities not listed above. If you are in Southwest Florida, call 239-566-8642 and we will tell you straight away whether we cover your address.
Twelve feet is the practical minimum for a single-lane residential driveway, and fourteen to sixteen feet is more comfortable — especially for larger vehicles or a driveway that requires turning as you enter. If you tow a boat or trailer, go wider than you think you need. Widening a gate later means moving posts, which is most of the cost of the original install.
Often, yes. The question is whether the existing gate and posts can carry the load and cycle count an operator will put on them. A gate that already sags will fail faster once a motor is driving it. We assess the gate, posts, and footings first and tell you honestly whether automation is a retrofit or a rebuild.
A gate is a lever, and all of its weight hangs off a small number of fasteners on one post. Sagging comes from an undersized or shallow gate post, a missing diagonal brace, hinges too light for the gate's weight, or a span too wide for the frame. We oversize gate posts, set them deeper than line posts, brace the frame diagonally, and use hinges rated well above the actual gate weight.
Florida's residential pool barrier requirements specify that gates open outward away from the pool, and be self-closing and self-latching with the release mechanism positioned so a young child cannot reach it. Height and gap requirements match the barrier itself. Because local amendments exist, we verify the exact specification with your building department before installing. See our Florida pool fence guide.
Yes, and it is one of the most common calls we get. Gates wear out long before the fence does because they are the only moving part. We can match most existing fence styles closely, though on an older weathered fence a new gate will not match the color exactly at first.
